Brazil has the largest economy and population of Latin America. It has traditionally aspired to lead the region and has campaigned to win a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. General elections are due to be held in October this year. The race remains open, but current polls suggest that the incumbent centre-left president, Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva, is set to win re-election to what would be his fourth four-year presidential term. On the far-right Lula has been opposed by former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) a close political associate and family friend of Donald Trump’s. Bolsonaro is currently banned from running for public office since he was found guilty last year by the Supreme Court of conspiring against democracy and given a long (27 year) prison sentence. At the moment one of his sons, Flavio Bolsonaro, is due to stand as his proxy in the presidential race, but that may change as various right-leaning individuals and political parties are discussing potential coalitions.
