BRAZIL: Banco Master case judge faces rising pressure

The high-profile fraud investigation involving the collapsed bank Banco Master has raised questions over the credibility of Brazil’s supreme court (STF), especially regarding the impartiality of STF justice José Antonio Dias Toffoli, who stepped down as the presiding judge of the case on 12 February. Dias Toffoli had been under pressure for months, with several reports in the media highlighting his indirect connections to Banco Master, raising concerns over a possible conflict of interest, given that a company owned by his family had previous business dealings with individuals tied to the controversial bank.
