US-Argentina ties on display at Board of Peace meeting

Argentina: On 19 February Argentina’s President Javier Milei attended the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace initiative in Washington DC, which has the stated aim of bringing about peace in Gaza. The trip comes as Milei has emerged as one of the Trump administration’s closest allies in the region. Indeed, Trump gave Milei a special mention during his speech at the meeting, stating that he had “endorsed” him in recent elections. Trump said that Milei had been “a little behind in the polls and he ended up winning by a landslide”, in an apparent reference to the stronger-than-expected performance of Milei’s far-right La Libertad Avanza (LLA) in October’s mid-term congressional elections. Additionally, the day after the meeting, the US Department of State posted a photo of Milei in close conversation with Secretary of State Marco Rubio with the caption ‘Peace is the Prize’. Milei was one of three Latin American leaders to participate in the meeting, along with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele and Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña. The only other Latin American country involved was Mexico, which sent its ambassador to the United Nations in the capacity of an observer. The trip comes as Milei is preparing for another visit to the US on 7 March where he is due to meet Trump in Miami along with other right-leaning Latin American heads of state, including Bukele, Peña, Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz, Ecuador’s Daniel Noboa, and Honduras’ Nasry Asfura, according to press reports.
