HONDURAS: Attorney general fired in ominous sign for Libre

Following the launch of the first impeachment case against a top official since impeachment proceedings were enshrined in 2013 legislation, Honduras’ attorney general Johel Zelaya has been fired by the 128-member unicameral legislature. The dismissal of Zelaya, an ally of former president Xiomara Castro (2022-2026) of the now-opposition leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre), illustrates the significantly changed political landscape following the chaotic 30 November 2025 general election, which returned the conservative Partido Nacional (PN) to power, this time under former Tegucigalpa mayor (2014-2022) Nasry Asfura. It illustrates the strength in congress of the PN, which has forged a loose legislative alliance with the main opposition Partido Liberal (PL) [WR-26-06], all of which augurs badly for Libre.
