The US administration led by President Donald Trump has been leveraging sanctions to target the financial networks of Mexico’s main criminal groups. The Cártel del Noreste (CDN), one of six Mexican cartels designated as foreign terrorist organisations by the US last year, is the subject of the latest sanctions, which target an alleged money laundering and cash smuggling network. In a departure from previous announcements, however, the sanctions include a well-known human rights activist.
