In brief: Mexico registers trade surplus in March

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released trade figures for March 2026, revealing a trade surplus of US$5.93bn. This is up from deficits of US$463m in February and US$6.48bn in January. Exports in March totalled US$70.73bn, up 27.7% year-on-year, while imports totalled US$64.80bn, up 24.3% on March 2025. Inegi attributed March’s surplus to an increase in the trade balance of non-oil products, which went from a surplus of US$1.55bn in February to a surplus of US$8.32bn in March. Despite March’s surplus, the first quarter of 2026 registered a trade deficit of US$1.01bn, compared to a deficit of US$269m in the same period of 2025.
