In brief: Panama and Dominican Republic boost trade ties

*Panama’s President José Raúl Mulino and the Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader have held a bilateral meeting in Panama City on the sidelines of the 12th congress of the World Free Zones Organization (World FZO), which Panama is hosting from 12 to 14 May. According to a press release by the Panamanian presidency, the two leaders discussed boosting diplomatic and trade relations and migration, including expanding the exchange of goods and leveraging the facilities offered by their respective free trade zones. The two also discussed migration and security; the upcoming election of a new secretary-general of the United Nations; the current status of the Central American integration system (Sica); and incentives to encourage Dominican tourists to visit Panama, among other things. The Panamanian delegation included the ministers of foreign affairs (Javier Martínez-Acha); trade and industry (Julio Moltó); and economy and finance (Felipe Chapman), while the Dominican delegation included Foreign Minister Eduardo Sanz Lovaton, and the Dominican Republic’s ambassador to Panama, Roberto Salcedo Gavilán.
