Rare earths and critical minerals

The European perspective

The European Union (EU) is part of the wider global rush to secure rare earth supplies and has expressed interest in working with Latin American countries to reduce their dependence on China. Brussels has identified 34 critical raw materials (CRMs) most of which have to be imported. Twenty-five of those on the list can be found in South America. EU documents stress the fact that CRMs are strategically sensitive since they are essential for modern industry, car manufacturing, mass communications, weaponry, and many other applications. But they also make the case for CRMs as essential to improve European competitiveness.
