A report by US broadcaster CNN released on 10 May, that US military intelligence-gathering flights “are surging off the coast of Cuba”, is fuelling major speculation regarding the intentions of US President Donald Trump, who has previously threatened to “take” the island. With Trump ramping up rhetoric and actions in recent days – as evidenced in the 1 May economic sanctions [WR-26-18], the reports of the surveillance flights come amid little sign of breakthrough in the talks with Havana, which has dug in its heels over US demands of political and economic reform. This all comes as the Cuban government was recently forced to admit that Washington’s fuel blockade of the island since January – the hitherto thrust of its current maximum pressure campaign – had left it without any diesel or fuel oil.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1863 words.
