MEXICO: Pressure rises over Sinaloa accusations

Since the US Department of Justice unsealed an indictment accusing 10 current and former Mexican officials of ties to the Cártel de Sinaloa, President Claudia Sheinbaum has been playing for time. The accusations have served as the latest test for Sheinbaum as she attempts to address US security priorities while standing firm on her defence of Mexican sovereignty. So far, she has avoided making too definitive a judgement regarding the accusations, neither fully backing the accused – many of whom hail from her ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) - nor wholeheartedly accepting the allegations. However, this position is becoming increasingly untenable, as developments this week have shown.
