In brief: Bolivia’s Paz cuts his salary in bid to calm protests

*Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz has announced that he and his ministerial cabinet have agreed to cut their salaries by 50% as a sign of their “commitment to the country”. The current presidential salary, prior to the reduction announced by Paz, is B$24,251 (US$3,514) per month, while ministers earn B$21,556 and deputy ministers earn B$20,816. Paz’s announcement came as his administration continues to be rocked by major anti-government protests that have seen highways blocked around the country. Interior Minister Marco Antonio Oviedo announced the launch on 23 May of a “humanitarian” operation to clear roadblocks on the highway linking Oruro department with the capital La Paz and the neighbouring city of El Alto, in order to ensure the supply of essential goods such as food and medicines. However, Public Works Minister Mauricio Zamora told local television channel Red Uno later that day that the operation had been suspended after security personnel were “ambushed” by crowds throwing stones and detonating dynamite.
