In brief: Fujimori and Sánchez hold debate ahead of Peruvian election

*The presidential candidates in Peru’s 7 June run-off election, Keiko Fujimori of the right-wing Fuerza Popular (FP) and Roberto Sánchez of the left-wing Juntos por el Perú (JPP), have held the final televised debate of the campaign. Sánchez, who trailed Fujimori by around five percentage points in the 12 April first round, sought to assuage concerns that he is seeking to make radical changes to Peru’s economic model. He said that if he is elected, he will keep the long-serving president of the central bank (BCRP), Julio Velarde, in his post. Velarde has headed the BCRP since 2006 and is viewed by markets as a key factor in Peru’s solid economic performance amid growing political instability which has seen the country churn through 10 presidents in the two decades that Velarde has held his position. Sánchez also promised to raise the minimum wage, starting by increasing it to PEN1,500 (US$441) per month, up from its current rate of PEN1,130. He also said that he would create a PEN15bn loan programme for entrepreneurs. Fujimori, meanwhile, claimed that Sánchez would “prohibit agricultural exports, halt mining, [and] limit the importation of basic goods”. Fujimori said that she would reform the tax and customs systems, defend the autonomy of the BCRP, revive stalled infrastructure projects, and stabilise fuel prices through government intervention.
