In brief: Peru’s Sánchez unveils new manifesto ahead of election

*The left-wing Peruvian presidential candidate, Roberto Sánchez (Juntos por el Perú, JPP), who will face the right-wing Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular, FP) in the 7 June run-off election, has issued a revised manifesto just six days before the vote. Speaking at a press conference, Sánchez said that the changes reflect “maturity” and the need to build a political majority. The new manifesto retains the goal of establishing a new constitution, but no longer includes a proposal to form a constituent assembly. It also commits to respecting Peru’s free trade agreements, which Sánchez had previously said could be revised. Among other things, the new manifesto also proposes increasing state involvement in sectors deemed to be of strategic development value; establishing the ‘rights of nature’ as a constitutional principle; reducing the fiscal deficit without impacting essential social programmes; implementing a ‘Made in Peru’ industrialisation programme; not privatising state oil company Petroperú; and a moratorium on new mining concessions in the Amazon, as well as a review of existing concessions that sit on Amazonian water sources. The new manifesto was released one day after Sánchez and Fujimori faced off in the final televised debate of the campaign. In its final poll before the election, released on 31 May, Ipsos gave Fujimori a narrow lead that sat within the margin of error, leading Sánchez by 38%-35%, with 12% of respondents saying they would cast blank or spoiled ballots and 15% undecided.
