MEXICO: Sheinbaum takes stock
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered a speech on 31 May to mark the second anniversary of her electoral victory in June 2024. The tone of her address was particularly fierce, with the head of state defending Mexican sovereignty and rattling off the economic, social, and security-related achievements of her presidency so far. The speech came at a crucial time for Sheinbaum, as she continues to face increasing pressure from the US administration of President Donald Trump and prepares for next year’s midterm elections amid difficulties within the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena). With the speech, Sheinbaum appeared to be sending a message of strength in the face of these difficulties, reasserting her power and demonstrating her continuing popularity.
