MEXICO: Attack on Oaxaca governor a sham
The much-publicised attempt of the life of outgoing Oaxaca governor José Murat, which took place last March [WR-04-12], has turned out to be a sham. An investigation by the federal chief prosecutor's office, PGR, has found that the event was staged by the governor and his bodyguards. It does not add the conclusion reached early on by his opposition in Oaxaca, that Murat's purpose was to give his Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) a needed boost in the forthcoming gubernatorial elections.
