*The right-wing candidate
Keiko Fujimori (Fuerza Popular, FP) has regained the narrowest of leads against the left-wing
Roberto Sánchez (Juntos por el Perú, JPP) as the vote count continues following Peru's presidential run-off on 7 June. The latest results from the electoral authority (Onpe) show that, with 98.215% of votes counted, Fujimori leads by 50.002%-49.998%. This equates to a lead of just 651 votes. Momentum has swung between the two candidates, with Fujimori gaining an
early lead before
being overtaken by Sánchez on 8 June. Tensions are climbing, with Sánchez yesterday claiming on social media that
“manoeuvres” are underway
“to twist democracy”. JPP yesterday issued a joint statement with two centre-left parties, Partido Cívico Obras (PCO) and Ahora Nación (AN), which were represented in the election’s first round by the fifth-placed
Ricardo Belmont and the seventh-placed
Alfonso López-Chau, respectively, voicing concern at
“speculative, late, and baseless corrections” of the
quick count conducted by the pollster Ipsos in the immediate aftermath of the vote, which predicted a Sánchez victory. Ipsos Perú’s president,
Alfredo Torres, said on 9 June that, with the vast majority of votes now counted,
“in most scenarios, Fujimori wins”.
