"Guategate" security scandal shakes Colom government

The discovery of spying devices in the offices and home of Guatemala's President Alvaro Colom, and the alleged complicity of his top security officials, signified one of the worst security crises to have afflicted the country in years. Adding to the resultant climate of fear and uncertainty, was Colom's decision to summon the military to take charge of the presidential palace, a move which cast a whole new light on his announcement days earlier of plans to expand the army.
