MEXICO: Oaxaca mayor killing renews security concerns
The murder of Joel Ángel Bravo Martínez, the mayor of San Miguel Amatitlán municipality in Oaxaca state, has once again shone a light on the issue of political violence in Mexico. The killing of Bravo, a member of the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), has drawn particular outrage given that he asked the state governor, Salamón Jara of the federally ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), for protection just weeks before his murder. The incident will raise questions around the security protocols in place for those planning to run in next year’s midterm elections, which will see thousands of municipal positions elected alongside 17 state governorships and the entire federal lower chamber of congress.
