HAITI: Edging towards elections

“A key step in the implementation of the electoral process” was how Haiti’s provisional electoral council (CEP) described its unveiling of a list of no fewer than 316 political parties approved to compete in long overdue elections. While the list marks a small step forward, significant uncertainties persist – most notably the lack of a definitive date for what would be the country’s first elections in over a decade. Although these had been pencilled in for August, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé - the country’s sole leader since February when the mandate of the country’s transitional presidential council (CPT) expired - was compelled to announce their postponement in May [WR-26-19], citing widespread insecurity, which has since shown few signs of abating.
