*Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo has announced that the government has allocated Q3.48bn (US$456.47m) to go on fuel subsidies until the end of the year as part of a proposed law to reduce fuel costs which have risen as a result of the war in the Middle East. The proposed law includes a subsidy of Q12 per gallon of diesel and Q3 per gallon of regular gasoline. Arévalo said this would be paid for using funds which have yet to be allocated in the current budget. His announcement came as transport lobbies Cámara de Transportistas Urbanos e Interurbanos de Guatemala (Catug) and Cámara de Movilidad Estratégica de Transporte (Cademet) announced a peaceful protest involving a convoy of 200 buses on strategic roads into the capital Guatemala City on 24 July in response to high fuel prices, although this has since been called off following Arévalo’s announcement. In April Arévalo  announced new fuel subsidies lasting three months to address the spike in fuel prices due to the war in the Middle East.
