PANAMA: Improving ties with Beijing?

Panama’s recent announcement of plans to renew a 2017 maritime agreement with China is one of various signs of an improvement in bilateral relations. These appeared under severe strain earlier this year after Panama’s supreme court (CSJ) struck down a concession in January for two ports on the Panama Canal that had been awarded to Panama Ports Company (PPC), a subsidiary of Hong Kong-headquartered CK Hutchison Holdings (CKHH), amid geopolitical tensions with the US [WR-26-08].
