CUBA: Díaz-Canel claims progress over economic reforms

President Miguel Díaz-Canel recently claimed that the Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) government had approved 80 of the 176 proposals included in a sweeping economic reform package announced last month [WR-26-24], designed to appease the US administration led by President Donald Trump which is carrying out a maximum pressure campaign on the island aimed at extracting significant political and economic reforms. However, Havana’s efforts continue to show little sign of meeting its objective; the day before Díaz-Canel’s latest update, Washington announced the latest round of designations since Trump hardened sanctions on Cuba on 1 May [WR-26-18] – on this occasion targeting Cuba’s overseas medical missions and energy sector, inter alia.
