*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has denied that tariffs that her government has imposed on fertilisers from China are a retaliation for Chinese tariffs on Mexican pecans. Asked about the tariffs in a press conference, Sheinbaum said that “it has to do with another issue”, adding that the economy ministry (SE) was “in communication with its counterparts in China, through the Chinese embassy in Mexico, as well as in contact with producers”. This comes as the SE published a resolution in the official gazette (DOF) on 14 August announcing it had concluded an antidumping investigation into imports of ammonium sulphate from China and was imposing a countervailing duty of US$0.1488 per kilogram on such imports due to “unfair international trade practices, specifically price discrimination”. This came after China’s ministry of commerce (Mofcom) announced on 10 August in a preliminary determination that it was imposing tariffs of between 17.8% and 51.6% on imports of pecans from Mexico, following an antidumping investigation. Pecan imports from the US will be subject to a 54.3% tariff. Mexican companies have 10 days to respond to the preliminary determination, while the SE said it “will continue working towards a final ruling that does not impose countervailing duties on Mexican producers”.
