MEXICO: Pressure rises on Rocha

The outlook is not looking good for Rubén Rocha Moya. The governor of Sinaloa state, currently on leave, was indicted by the US for alleged drug ties in April, prompting him to take a leave of absence from his role [WR-26-18]. On 21 August he triumphantly declared he was returning to the governorship, only to request a leave of absence again two days later, following strong backlash from the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) – his own party – and President Claudia Sheinbaum herself. This perhaps indicates that patience with Rocha, a previously influential figure within Morena, is wearing thin, as his case continues to cause difficulties for Sheinbaum in her dealings with the US government of President Donald Trump. There may be more trouble ahead for Rocha, too, as the federal attorney general’s office (FGR) recently announced the arrest of a key witness in a case that could shed light on the alleged collusion between the Sinaloa state government and the Cártel de Sinaloa.
