ECUADOR: Moreno convicted; González barred
Ecuador’s former president Lenín Moreno (2017-2021) was sentenced to five years in prison on 28 August for bribery. He was found guilty of receiving bribes to facilitate the financing of the construction of Coca Codo Sinclair, the country’s largest hydroelectric plant, by the Chinese company Sinohydro. Moreno previously served as vice president under Rafael Correa (2007-2017) before a bitter estrangement between the formerly close allies. Correa’s current inner circle, meanwhile, suffered a serious setback this week when Luisa González, a two-times former presidential candidate for his left-wing party Revolución Ciudadana (RC), saw her appeal against her disqualification from standing in November’s local elections rejected.
