MEXICO | Pursuing a trade deal with the US. President Claudia Sheinbaum and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick held “very useful” talks on 9 September to advance bilateral trade negotiations, according to Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard, who was also present for the virtual meeting. Ebrard subsequently flew to Washington to continue talks over the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which President Donald Trump announced in June would be subject to annual review. Trump told reporters on 4 September that Mexico had nothing to offer the US beyond “hot tamales, tomatoes, a couple of things”, repeating his threat to stop trading with countries with which the US has a deficit. Mexico is one of those countries, although Trump added that he was not planning on ending bilateral trade because he got on “very well” with Sheinbaum.
