NICARAGUA: Weaponising the constitution
Nicaragua’s 92-member unicameral legislature, which like all of the country’s institutions is controlled by the authoritarian government led by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, has rubber-stamped various constitutional amendments. The changes, which require approval in a second reading scheduled for 18 January 2027 and follow a wide-ranging constitutional reform package approved last year [WR-25-08], effectively exclude the opposition from participation in future elections, further concentrating power in the hands of the ruling couple.
