*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its figures for the country’s retail sales in July, which showed a 0.8% monthly decrease in sales volume. In year-on-year terms, monthly sales were up 1.2% compared to July 2025, and the accumulated annual sales in the 12 months through July 2026 were up 1.6% on the preceding 12-month period. Of the eight product categories measured by the Ibge, five posted monthly decreases. The greatest declines were registered in furniture and home appliances (-4.9%), books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (-4.2%), and fabrics, clothing, and footwear (-2.7%). The three categories that saw monthly increases were fuels and lubricants (+0.3%), pharmaceutical, medical, and orthopaedic items and perfumes (+0.6%), and office supplies and information and communications equipment (+0.6%).
