Mexico greenlights US military training exercise
Mexico: On 14 September the Mexican senate authorised the entry of members of the US armed forces into the country to participate in a joint specialised training exercise in the state of Chihuahua. The senate approved the request from President Claudia Sheinbaum, which was considered urgent, with 75 votes in favour. This now allows the entry of US troops who will participate in the exercise from 20-30 September in the national training centre at the Santa Gertrudis military base, Saucillo municipality. The exercise intends to “strengthen operational capabilities between the US armed forces and Mexico through the planning and execution of military operations, in accordance with the principles of respect, sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared responsibility, mutual trust and collaboration” according to the senate press release. The delegation will consist of 139 personnel from the 101st airborne division of the US army, who will arrive fully armed on a US Air Force aircraft at the 5th military air zone in Santa Gertrudis. The press release concludes by stating that the exercise will not only help to strengthen individual and collective preparedness, “but will also contribute to the improvement of bilateral mechanisms for military cooperation between the two countries”. The announcement follows previous tensions between the Mexican government and Chihuahua state government, as well as the US, after two unauthorised Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agents were killed in a car crash while travelling with Chihuahua state officials who were returning from a raid on a drug lab, suggesting they had been operating in the state without the knowledge of the federal government. The resolution follows a similar motion which was passed by the senate in April 2025, allowing 120 members of the US Northern Command to take part in a training exercise in the same location.
