In brief: Argentina’s economy slumps in July, poverty rate climbs

*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has reported that economic activity fell 2.9% month-on-month in July, on seasonally adjusted figures, based on the monthly economic activity estimator (Emae), a monthly proxy for GDP. It is the steepest monthly drop since at least January 2023. Economic activity fell 1.4% year-on-year from July 2025. Fishing (+424.5%) and mining (+8.4%) led seven sectors that grew year-on-year, while wholesale and retail trade (-5.1%) and manufacturing (-4.6%) led eight sectors to post yearly declines. Indec also reported that urban poverty climbed to 32.3% of the population in the first half of 2026, up 4.1 percentage points from the second half of 2025. The share of households in poverty rose to 24.4%, up 3.4 points, while extreme poverty – the inability to afford a basic food basket – rose to 7.5% of people and 5.6% of households, up 1.2 and 0.8 percentage points, respectively. In total, 9.73m people and 2.5m households were classed as below the poverty line, including 2.25m people in extreme poverty. Indec attributed the increase in poverty rates to incomes failing to keep pace with living costs. Average per capita family income rose 11.5% over the first half of the year, while the cost of the basic food basket and total basic basket, which are used to measure poverty, rose 21.4% and 19.6%, respectively.
