In brief: Mexico boosts ties with South Korea

*Mexico’s Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard has met with South Korea’s President Lee Jae Myung as part of his visit to Mexico which also saw him meet President Claudia Sheinbaum on 24 September. Ebrard and Lee led a forum of 400 business leaders at which seven memorandums of understanding were signed between Korean and Mexican companies and business organisations. Organised by Mexico’s business council of foreign trade, investment, and technology (Comce), a private sector association, and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), a business association, the forum addressed topics such as the importance of regional value chains in North America involving Korean companies, new energy sources, and industry for a sustainable future, as well as shared growth in the creative and cultural industries. Lee, who had agreed to boost bilateral cooperation on science and technology during a meeting with Sheinbaum on 24 September, stated that Mexico had established itself as a key hub in the North American supply chain and as a leading global production centre for advanced manufacturing, including sectors such as automotive, electronics, and aerospace, while also praising Sheinbaum’s Plan México economic programme, which looks to attract investment and boost domestic industry. In conjunction with the forum, Ebrard held working meetings with South Korea’s Trade, Industry, and Resources Minister Kim Jung-Kwan, during which they agreed to increase cooperation and business between the two countries. Ebrard also held working meetings with executives from Hyosung, a Korean company seeking to expand its automotive carpet business in Mexico’s San Luis Potosí state, as well as with Naver, a Korean technology company with which he discussed potential collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence.
