*Mexico’s Economy Minister
Marcelo Ebrard has pushed for better trade conditions for Mexico during the G20 trade ministers meeting in Milwaukee in the US state of Wisconsin. Ebrard took part in a number of plenary sessions and meetings with international officials, lobbying for “
better opportunities and conditions for Mexican exports, whilst promoting investment in the country”, according to a press release from the Mexican government. The minister focused on Mexican exports of steel, vehicles, and tequila, for example stating that the domestic steel industry “
does not compete on a level playing field with steel industries in other countries that operate under different standards and engage in unfair practices”. Ebrard equally discussed a range of bilateral trade topics with partner nations, notably export opportunities to the European Union (EU) with European Commissioner for Trade
Maroš Šefčovic, as well as tequila exports and collaboration in the pharmaceutical industry with India’s trade and industry minister,
Piyush Goyal. Ebrard also met with Japan’s Economy, Trade, and Industry Minister
Shuji Miyamoto, in addition to Argentina’s secretary for international economic relations,
Fernando Brun, with whom Ebrard “
called for an increase in the quotas for light vehicle exports” to Argentina.
