In brief: Venezuela and Dominican Republic seek closer ties

*Venezuela’s President Delcy Rodríguez has met her Dominican counterpart, Luis Abinader, on the sidelines of the World Food Forum, held by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome. A statement from Abinader’s office said that they discussed the opening of a Dominican consulate in Venezuela and the possibility of the Dominican Republic importing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and bitumen AC30 from Venezuela. This will be discussed in further detail between Venezuela’s state oil company, Pdvsa, and the Dominican state oil refiner, Refidomsa. A Venezuelan statement said that the meeting sought to “strengthen diplomatic relations and cooperation between both countries” and that “the leaders evaluated complementarity schemes and strategic alliances to drive trade, diplomacy, and economic and cultural development”. It added that “they also focused on strategies to increase food production, encourage technical exchange, and adopt sustainable agricultural practices in light of climate change”. The two countries announced a “gradual normalisation” of bilateral relations on 2 August, two years after Venezuela expelled Dominican diplomatic staff due to the country’s questioning of the 2024 presidential election in which former president Nicolás Maduro (2013-2026) claimed victory despite the full results never being released.
