ECUADOR: Failure of 'uprising' extends respite for Gutiérrez

More than a victory for President Lucio Gutiérrez, last week marked a resounding defeat for the umbrella indigenous confederation, Conaie, whose ´uprising ´, launched on 7 June against Gutiérrez and billed as ´general, popular and of all the social organisations ´, fizzled out for lack of support. Gutiérrez did pull off one coup: he got the 34th general assembly of the OAS, meeting in Quito, to adopt as its main agenda item the issue of corruption.
