The US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs,
Arturo Valenzuela, insisted on 6 December that he was not in Tegucigalpa to make
amends for the recent WikiLeaks cable in which the US ambassador to Honduras,
Hugo Llorens, unequivocally informed the US State Department that the former
president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009) was illegally removed in a coup d'état on 28
June 2009. Valenzuela reiterated strong US support for the Honduran government
led by President Porfirio Lobo, but insisted that “national reconciliation will
advance more when Honduras is capable of resolving the issue of the return of ex
president Zelaya so that the country can recover its place in the OAS
