GUYANA PREPARES FOR ELECTIONS. Guyana is due to hold a
presidential and parliamentary election in August and both main parties are in
the process of selecting their presidential hopefuls. The leader of the main
opposition People's National Congress - Reform (PNCR), Robert Corbin, has
confirmed that he is not interested in being nominated as the party's
presidential candidate. With Corbin out of the picture, the best candidate is
said to be Carl Greenidge, former finance minister, but previous spells overseas
might mean that he is not best placed for the political contest. Other
possibilities for the nomination, to be decided on 19 February, include former
health minister Richard Van West Charles (who is also a son-in-law of the
founder of the PNC, Forbes Burnham) and former prime minister Hamilton Green. An
added complication is that the opposition might go for a joint candidate, which
might not be the PNCR nominee.
The choice for the ruling People's Progressive
Party Civic (PPPC) appears to be between general-secretary Donald Ramoutar,
House speaker Ralph Ramkarran, former information minister Moses Nagamootoo, and
Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee.
