Although the quality of education in Central America is generally lower than
in the rest of Latin America, standards of education have improved significantly
in recent decades and should continue to rise, albeit at a slow pace. According
to the 2011 Unesco Education for All Global Monitoring Report, Costa Rica has
the most successful educational system in Central America, but Nicaragua,
Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador have severe deficiencies in their systems.
This is clearly reflected in the level of direct foreign aid for education each
country receives: in 2008, Costa Rica received US$10m; El Salvador, US$27m;
Guatemala, US$47m; Honduras, US$58m; and Nicaragua, US$63m.
