DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Fernández ends speculation over re-election

President Leonel Fernández confirmed this month that he would not be seeking a second consecutive term in the May 2012 presidential vote. The following day his ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) held a party convention in which First Lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernández, a political novice, was announced as one of the PLD's seven presidential pre-candidates. The announcements put an end to what has been an ongoing source of speculation as to which Fernández would run, despite the ban on consecutive re-election under the new 2010 constitution.
