Lavandero case throws spotlight on new justice system

Chile's new justice system, implemented gradually across different regions over the past five years, came into effect throughout the country in mid June. The completion of the penal reform project coincided with the prosecution of Jorge Lavandero, a senator from the Demócrata Cristiana party, on charges of paedophilia. The case against the senator highlighted some of the reform project's teething problems.
