BRAZIL: Lula finally announces he will stand for re-election

President Lula da Silva announced on 24 June he will stand for re-election in October for the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). Lula's candidacy was highly expected, not least because he appears well ahead of all the other candidates in every opinion poll. For many, Lula's delay was calculated so that he could unveil a number of vote-winning measures, such as the above-inflation minimum wage increase, before Brazilian electoral laws prohibited him from doing so.
