ARGENTINA: Kirchner exploits weakness of opposition

President Néstor Kirchner looks like he is succeeding in his endeavour to exploit divisions in the opposition ahead of seeking re-election in 2007. The second biggest party in the legislature, the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR), will almost certainly not present a united face in the elections after five of the party's six provincial governors endorsed Kirchner's "plural reconstruction" plan, which aims to unite social, labour and political organisations for next year's elections. The UCR's rupture could also derail former economy minister Roberto Lavagna's putative candidacy: Lavagna was relying on the support of the UCR and dissident Peronists in former president Eduardo Duhalde's camp.
