MERCOSUR: Brazil-Venezuela rivalry in Paraguayan election

The rivalry between Brazil's President Lula da Silva and President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela has found a new battleground in the Paraguayan presidential elections. Despite the discretion of both Brazilian and Venezuelan governments on their preferred electoral outcome, declarations from two of the main candidates make it clear where their sympathies lie. While former General Lino Oviedo brags that his prospective government would seek closer ties with Brazil, his leftist-populist rival, Fernando Lugo, expresses anti-Brazilian sentiment in his campaign.
