CHILE: Zaldí­var deals for presidency of the senate

Chilean senator Adolfo Zaldí­var, recently expelled from the Christian Democrat (DC) party, has not only tipped the balance of power in the upper chamber of congress, but has also struck a formal agreement with the rightwing opposition bloc whereby he may become the president of the senate in March. The shock of this further humiliation has led the ruling Concertación alliance to negotiate with the rightwing Alianza a rotation system for the presidency of the lower chamber.
