According to recent figures from the Detecção do
Desmatamento em Tempo Real (Deter) satellite monitoring system, compiled
by the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), the overall rate
of land clearance in June, July and August was down 27% on the same period last
year - striking because this is the dry season, when deforestation is
traditionally highest. However, the August monthly figure was more than
double the one for July, confirming an increase in the total rate of
deforestation this year after three years of decline. The new environment
minister, Carlos Minc, has taken various actions to try and halt this
tendency.
