PARAGUAY: Lugo opens up on paternity scandal

Calm has been restored in Paraguay over the last month after a media frenzy surrounding the proliferation of paternity suits filed against President Fernando Lugo. The paternity suits have fizzled out for now but they might have inflicted enduring damage on the Lugo government. The erosion of Lugo's credibility has encouraged the fragmented opposition to coalesce. The two main currents in the opposition Partido Colorado (PC) voted together in congress in May for the first time since Lugo was elected last year. Meanwhile the paternity scandal has deepened divisions in the Partido Liberal Radical Auténtico (PLRA), the mainstay of Lugo's Alianza Patriótica para el Cambio (APC) coalition.
