URUGUAY: Mujica and Lacalle set for showdown

Uruguay's three main political parties will select their presidential candidates in primary elections on 28 June. The contests in the ruling Frente Amplio (FA) coalition and the main opposition Blancos have looked close for many months. Recent opinion polls suggest that two candidates have now established decisive leads: José Mujica, the octogenarian former Tupamaro guerrilla, in the FA; and former president Luis Alberto Lacalle (1990-1995) in the Blancos. Pedro Bordaberry will comfortably win the nomination for the Partido Colorado but only Mujica and Lacalle stand any chance of winning October's presidential contest.
