ECONOMIC OVERVIEW: PARAGUAY

The government has come up with an idea to resolve the problema over Itaipú. Paraguay is now suggesting that it should have right to sell electricity from Itaipú directly to Brazilian consumers rather than justing to Eletrobras, the state-owned Brazilian company. The idea is being put forward by Carlos Mateo Balmelli, the Paraguayan director of the jointly owned hydro-electric dam.  He put the idea to Brazilian industrialists at the end of May.
