Lula still number one for Brazilians

On 1 June two new polls revealed that President Lula da Silva remains incredibly popular as he heads into his final 18 months in office and, despite his ineligibility for the 2010 elections, he still tops voters lists of spontaneous candidates by a strong double digit margin. Lula's sustained popularity, allied to signs that the current economic downturn has bottomed out, is problematic for the main centrist opposition, which has responded with fresh corruption allegations in an effort to discredit the government.
