CHILE: New magistrate makes waves

The newly appointed investigating magistrate for eastern Santiago, Alejandro Peña, wants to show that he is making progress in the investigation of 100 or so bombings in the city since 2006. He took over in June, after the interior minister, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, made some pretty pointed comments about his predecessor. So far, Peña has arrested one alleged bomb maker, Roberto Gajardo, and on 8 August claimed that an Italian, Matteo Rossi, had sent money to Chilean anarchists, who appear to be in league with Mapuche militants, via the Cayman Islands.
