Argentina's surprise "cultural ambassador"

Since Carlos Menem divorced his first wife, Zulema Yoma, in 1991, the children of Argentine presidents have not played any major ceremonial role. The Menems' divorce compelled their daughter Zulemita to take on the mantle of First Lady during foreign trips and state visits by foreign leaders; the death of Néstor Kirchner has now had a similar effect on President Cristina Fernández and the Kirchner family. As with the Menems, the daughter, not the son, has accompanied Fernández in official state visits.
